Phil, I max out my 401K with Roth contributions each year . However, my company offers a self-directed option for our 401k, meaning I can pick my own individual companies and stocks, any that are available through TD Ameritrade. I agree that most of the mutual fund options available to most 401ks are not the greatest, but those are not the only available options for everyone. I'd love to hear your thoughts on self-directed 401k at some point. Thanks!

I lost my shirt during the great recession in 2008 by falling into many of the money traps Phil just mentioned. Not falling into those traps again this time around.
