What are empty blocks and are they necessarily bad? What are orphan blocks? Where do bitcoin balances come from? What is meaning of “the longest cumulative difficulty, valid chain”?

These questions are from the MOOC 8.2, 9.2, 9.3, 9.4, and 9.5 sessions, which took place on September 15th 2017, February 23rd, March 2nd, March 9th, and March 16th 2018 respectively. Andreas is a teaching fellow with the University of Nicosia. The first course in their Master of Science in Digital Currency degree, DFIN-511: Introduction to Digital Currencies, is offered for free as an open enrollment MOOC course to anyone interested in learning about the fundamental principles.

  1. Great video. Very well explained. Let me ask a practical question about it. Everyone right now is talking and waiting for the BCH hard fork and commenting on that _________ (male genital) Craig Wright. His "war" against everyone has triggered a post on his twitter threatening to mine empty blocks. By doing so he says it will cripple the network and you dont need 51% of the hash, you just need a respectable percentage. He then moved on to say that he will do the same with BTC. Of course I believe he is a dickless man-child that hasn't had any sex that was volutary in his life but my question is – Could such an action really cripple a network as large as Bitcoin, because from what i understood from the video, mining empty blocks isnt something that changes the chance of fining legit blocks or slowing down transaction verification time.?

  2. When you say 49% percent cointinues mining the honest chain, what do you mean by that? Arent all the nodes already accepting the dishonest chain as soon as it has more proof of work?

  3. Do not try and redefine the Satoshi. That's impossible. Instead… only try to realize the truth. There is no Satoshi. Then you'll see, that it is not the Satoshi that bends, it is only the Blockchain.

  4. I wish Andreas would be an advisor for the Particl Project, because he understands bitcoin, lightning and cryptography so well.

Sadly its just a never ending dream of mine 😀

Keep it up Andreas, you rock !
