Are blockchains useful for supply chain transparency, disintermediation, and integrity control? To some extent, but there is a big difference between models that use intrinsic, native assets vs. extrinsic assets. The latter is currently very difficult to do in a decentralized way or without reintroducing counter-party risk. You need to think about this problem not only as a technologist but from the perspective of each of the human components involved. Sometimes the more you try to apply technical solutions, the easier it is for that system to be gamed by human ingenuity.

I don't agree. I appreciate his concern, but if you put a sensor in each box, and each box is tamper resistant, then you're safe.
Modum + Tangle
FOODCOIN
WTC
Excellent and important distinctions, yes, but doesn't blockchain technology solve other database problems that aren't just about issues of human integrity?
look at walton chain andreas they solved that problem
Hahaha, that ice cube exploit was brilliant!
This speech is gold, sorry, I mean, bitcoin.
oxi bit coin alla bit coin cash;;
unbelievable to see this guy (usually brilliant ) get his trump hour
truck driver example is the easiest thing to FIX!… truck driver simply driver they can't get anywhere near the goods car is sealed. If car breaks down its not his problem …
Modum wabi out ! lol
Respect…..!
Autonomous native on chain robot/drone "custodians" to handle primary off chain assets. Like food.
Another cut of a longer talk. More talks please.
Recording the text of a politician's public speeches into a blockchain would make politics less corrupt.
Most seem happy to rewrite history inadvertantly causing dementia to old people.
Viva Satosh!
Do you realize that Modum in 6-12 months will have light sensors, ok, keep that in mind. And remind this, sensor are inside the box, not outside:). He gave that example with a mad truck driver that could broke " data integrity" but you can use light sensors and temperature sensors in the same packet:) . For a mad truck driver to broke data integrity of that packet, he needs to open the box, but guess what , LIGHT SENSORS. That s my argument for that shit. You can play with tech guys, that s the beauty. Don t listen to this kind of fudders and do your homework:) this comes from a modum investor, He is a bitcoin shiller and will die with it ,hist last argument is just fud without substance:)
god damn ask a more concise question. people don't want to hear you, they want to hear andreas
Articulate and thoughtful as ever.
Distributed computing paid by a token so you don't need a datacenter is where I see this going. Also, immutability of a database is an intrinsic quality that I'm sure has value in supply chain management, but I'm not sure it's necessary to reinvent the wheel.
Hehe, don't ask questions you don't want the answer to hey?
Solarcoin turns this problem on its head by creating a token as an incentive for generating more of a particular extrinsic asset (in this case solar energy power plants). Sure, there is a central authority that determines who gets to redeem the coins, and it is up to the userbase to hold the party accountable. Counter party risk is there, but the whole point of solarcoin is to give free coins to people who have installed solar panels. The longer the system continues to operate honestly, the more succesfully the network will fullfill the primary purpose of incentivizing growth of installed solar power. If the authority is proven to be corrupt, the network can fork into a different authority. Theoretically each token is backed by one megawatt hour of clean energy, and transactions are secured by a decentralized proof of stake system.
Similarly, Gridcoin leverages the existing BOINC project for distributed scientific computing, in which an organization issues scores to participants of various projects such as folding@HOME, SETI@HOME, einstein@HOME, cancer research, and others. A proof of stake blockchain uses BOINC scores as the extrinsic input, and the stakers vote to decide how much value should be assigned to each project in terms of how many tokens you get to redeem proportional to your BOINC score. This system has been so successful, that the Gridcoin network now crunches more research than the rest of the BOINC participants combined!
I think the only reason these projects can be successful is because the extrinsic asset they certify supports an altruistic cause. It remains to be seen how corruptible the system can become if the projects reach much higher valuations.
Cheers, and keep the great content coming!
Anther excellent video, Andreas. Keep up the great work and continue educating others about this fantastic space!

ANDREAS…..considered the Super Hero of blockchain awareness
I had this question on my mind for a while, and you gave an excellent and articular answer, as you always do.
I think you posted this just because of David's reply to your tweet. Am I correct?
Wouldn't the supply chain sensor in this case be stored inside the shipment, not externally?…the driver would need to breach the seal of the shipment to access the censor to game it in such a fashion at which point the shipment would be considered tampered with. How does that apply?
In this time of greed and mania we all need to refer the newbs to Andreas.
A marvellous job done here to discredit the integrity of blockchains via IOTs using a real world example. Well done!
