I read a story about that Rockdale, TX crypto mining site. Last I heard, Bitmain had essentially abandoned it. They convinced the mayor and the town council to give them a huge tax break with the promise that it would create 300 jobs. Obviously mining rigs don't require anywhere near that many employees. It was all a trick to get really cheap electricity and a cheap site. But then the price of Bitcoin plummeted and they backed out.

Just about anyone who's tried to explain cryptocurrency to their parents can safely say that ease of use is probably the biggest hurdle here. "Bitcoin banks" definitely aren't in line with Satoshi's vision but are probably a necessary step for mass adoption imo
