Last week I began a little series about decentralizing the internet, and I kicked off the series talking about Golem, which focuses on decentralizing computing power. Today I’m going to cover Maidsafe. Which targets decentralizing storage by distributing your encrypted data.

https://coinmarketcap.com/assets/maidsafecoin/
Maidsafe is currently listed 27th on coinmarketcap.com with a current price of .52 cents per coin
The current circulating supply is 452 million coins
And the 24 hour volume is 2 million dollars
And the market cap is 236 million dollars
By clicking on the “markets” tab here, you can see the exchanges that work with the coin. And the prices that the coin is being traded on those exchanges. So if you’re looking for an arbitrage opportunity, you can get a hint by checking out this section.
So you can see here that you can purchase Maidsafe on a number of different exchanges including Poloniex and Bittrex. When choosing which exchange to use for making trades, it’s best to use the exchange with the highest volume, in this case right now for Maidsafe, that exchange would be Poloniex.

Maidsafe has been working on providing a decentralized solution for data storage for quite some time now. This project, along with the few others that are also working towards providing a decentralized internet, no doubt was sparked by the mass surveillance state brought to us by the NSA and robustly cultivated thanks to websites like Facebook, Google and Yahoo which pretty much give away what should be your private information to the highest bidder. Here is Maidsafe’s approach towards finding a solution and hopefully preventing a nationalized internet.

MaidSAFE vs Sia vs Storj

The idea is that once you join the network you can volunteer your unused computer storage to be used by the network, the more storage you provide, the more safe coins you’ll be paid.
If you want to upload a file to the network, you will encrypt it first, then it is then divided into many “pieces”, randomized, and distributed throughout the entire network. Because you were the one to encrypt your file, you will be the only one with access to your file. The network will respond accordingly and redistribute the fragmented files as computers on the network are turned on and off.

What I think is the coolest aspect about Maidsafe- although it makes it sound like a pyramid scheme- is the fact that the more people who use the software, the more distributed the network becomes and the more space is made available for a faster network. It’s the complete opposite of what we are used to when popular sites get a huge influx of traffic and it causes the centralized servers to crash and the site goes down. With Maidsafe on the other hand, the more the better. Furthermore Maidsafe is designed in a way that it removes duplicates of all stored information, making it the very definition of efficient.

Status of Maidsafe project:

They have recently finished Alpha 1 testing and are now transitioning to alpha 2 testing which includes new APIs, a browser, tutorials and demo apps

Like I said earlier, Maidsafe and Golem aren’t the only projects working towards providing a decentralized internet, there are others like SIA, Shift, and coming soon, filecoin, which I’ll be covering in the future.

  1. Maidsafe is not just decentralized storage. Maidsafe is decentralized processing. The information in this video is incorrect. Maidsafe is a decentralized platform that allows websites, social networks and anything the internet does today. Please correct your video or take it down. Thank you.

  2. wow, does this mean that the websites on maidsafe cnt be hacked?
so people will flock to webs there bcoz of the safety aspect? (maidSAFE..its in the name..or have i gotten this one completely wrong? )

  3. Maidsafe vs Sia:
When data is copied to many hosts than it is not impossible to get the data (Decrypt) it is only impossible to delete (lose) the data… as long the whole network is not crashing down… As I know hosting on many operators is not how sia works, that is how maidsafe works !
As I know in sia, as an hdd host, you make kind of a fixed contract with your free hdd space, first you have to find a partner and second you have to pay penalty when your pc is forever or partial down… (Data deleted or not accessible). In maidsafe you simply give your free space into the whole network… In my opinion in that point of view maidsafe is by far better and more safe than sia, but sia is now working, maidsafe is not… (It's in the release phase… When it even will start?)

  4. I thought about this idea last year but i don't have the coding expertise. i never would have guessed someone would have turned this idea into a blockchain crowdsourcing type of technology. this is very fascinating. I have tried to buy ether so i can start investing in these ideas but i'm hitting roadblocks because "this service is not authorized in my region" i'm trying cex.io and coinbase.info. i see you are doing great things! idk where you came from but glad you are in our community!

  5. Mentioning pyramid schemes here causes unnecessary confusion, especially for those weak in critical thinking.
Keep it clear and clean. If I told you that you are like a bimbo with brains, logically the phrase negates itself (meaning that you are not a bimbo), but why would I risk the misunderstanding by mentioning something negative to convey something positive?

  6. No comparison with other projects.
Sia and Storj are decentralized STORAGE -period.
The only project that is capable of bringing a "decentralized internet" (as a secure distributed communication network, besides of storage) is MaidSafe's SafeNetwork.

  7. Maidsafe would be great if it gets out of alpha. From what i read on the Maidsafe site the current safe coins are on the test network and so are worthless until they switch to the live branch. I could be wrong. But ill wait until they get out of alpha before providing storage to the network.

  8. Having more nodes doesn't equate to a pyramid scheme at all. It just improves redundancy, availability, and scalability of the platform, but there is no "top" of the pyramid – everyone benefits. If every user had to pay and then recruit 2 more users in order to participate / get paid, and they got a portion of what their recruits and recruit's recruits have to pay, THAT would be a pyramid scheme.

  9. You need to become Life Coach, .. you look so happy and well balanced. I watch your videos not because of the technical aspect, but just because it brightens my day ?

  10. Thanks for taking the time to make this video (and the others you do). Your overviews are incredibly helpful for a n00b! I've subscribed to a few channels as well as this one – The Dollar Vigilante, RoadToRoota, JSnip4, Cliff High and some funny old brothers called the Crypto-Bit Brothers. Do you have any other recommendations?

  11. Paranoia: What if installing MaidSafe or Golem, etc. On your computer is giving NSA complete access to your computer? I read recently that NSA or some such has made back door code in other systems, like ATT. The open source code should inspire trust, but if you cannot read it you are trusting others that can. You have to tell yourself that if there is something fishy it will be reported. I have some MAID coin, but some uneasiness too.

  12. Maidsafe is my 2nd biggest crypto position. They have a 10 year head start so looks good! My brother is deep in Siacoin too but they're more interested in cloud storage like Storj. I spoke with the guys at shift and it seems like they are more concerned with partying then de-centralizing the internet. That was just the impression I got from our conversation.

  13. 2:30 Sounds like you have misunderstood what a pyramid scheme is.
3:00 "Removing duplicates of all stored information"…. That sounds unlikely. There needs to be duplicates on the network at all times so that a "blow out" ( just some computers shutting down or several synchronous regional power outtages) doesn't eliminate data availiability. However it could be the case that if two persons put "the same information" on the network it will not be stored twice, but made accesible with two different passwords. The original store procedure necessarily duplicates data several times though. Disclosure I don't hold Maidsafe nor know much about it, just applying logic here.
