How does Ethereum compete with Bitcoin? What is the position of each system in the broader ecology of blockchains?

This talk took place on September 18th 2016 at the Silicon Valley Ethereum meetup in Mountain View, California: https://www.meetup.com/EthereumSiliconValley/events/233988744/

  1. Best comment: „I’ve been interested and involved in Ethereum since the very beginning – actually since two weeks before the very beginning – because Vitalik send me the Whitepaper, and he asked me for comments. So I told him exactly why it wouldn’t work. Then he explained to me why I was wrong, and as it is usually the case with Vitalik, he has this very annoying tendency of being right.“

  2. Very good talk and Andreas is as always very clear in his way of explaining things and making them easier to understand. I like listening to his talks and learning from them.

  3. Is this channel's name supposed to mean "An Ant on Top"?
Is the channel logo supposed to be a guy's head, balding hairline and eyebrows and all, seen from above?

  4. Great talk, thank you Andreas. I love the analogy of Ethereum ruling the seas and Bitcoin ruling the land. Space for both and shows how they don't compete and solve different problems. May the impact of these two amazing technologies be far and wide

  5. The ultimate predator of the sea is a killer whale )) Thanks for the clear analogy, it was interesting to watch! I would say Bitcoin now is more of a financial (monetary) tool, while Ethereum is more of the managerial one. They interlink, but can not replace each other

  6. No one looks at the cost of execution (ether) of code on the Ethereum network.
No one looks at how organizations state that they will use Ethereum as a private Ethereum which does not use the token.
No one looks at the silly chat programme that Ethereum has sponsored, in which contributors to thread posts/comments which require Ether payments.

Ethereum is still a lab experiment.

  7. Bitcoin is the Lion and Ethereum the Human. Two apex predators, one evolved for the savannah and one evolved in the savannah but then adapted to fit more environments, having a larger dunbars number and using tools. We will see which one becomes dominant.

  8. When he says "Vitalik doesn't decide, founders don't decide, the market decides" I wonder if he can actually support this with data. If you look at the current holdings of the top richest addresses in all cryptos, you see that the majority is strictly in hands of the few. That doesn't sound like a decentralized alternative to me.

PS: There is no data on the Ethereum top100 btw, go figure.

  9. It would be wonderful if Andreas gave more lectures on Etherium like he did on bitcoin. After listening to all lectures of Andreas the idea behind bitcoin is pretty clear to me. But all lectures on Etherium are by programmers and IT specialists. I can hardly understand them.

  10. That's what I love about Andreas: he presents the facts without involving unnecessary human ideology and emotions. He's been preaching about the parallel co-existence of Bitcoin and Ethereum from day one.
