Is it possible to use the Lightning Network without Segregated Witness (SegWit)? It can work, but some useful features for privacy and security wouldn’t work.

Note: This video was recorded prior to SegWit activation in August.

This is part of a talk which took place at the ‘Bitcoins in Bali’ meetup on June 27th 2017 at the Hubud co-working space in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia: https://antonopoulos.com/event/bitcoins-in-bali-meetup/

  1. Please honorable sir, do 2017 "Bitcoin id Dead" talk.
I think it would be fascinating to address the back
and forth politics that has rared it head lately. Is
this latest assault on Bitcoin just boys throwing a
tamper tantrum or is it justified?

  2. Andreas, you provide so much info in such an easily understood way. Here is what I cant seem to find. I love the idea and want to support decentralized everything in other ways than just buying bitcoin. What can I do. I'm not too tech savy. What should I try to learn and try to look out for. Would building 1 small mining machine help? Would it help to contact our congressmen or representatives? What needs to be said? What should I ask of companies I do business with? How can I help.

  3. im having trouble importing my pk (private key) from my paper wallet to my new ledger wallet. i wrote my private key down in i guess is the wif format…? 52 digits starting with k. when i go to blockchain.info it tells me my pk is not right or something. i think its looking for a format that has 51 digits and starts with 5. im still "new" to this but any suggestions would be helpful. include you public key so i can thank the most helpful response. sorry if this is not the best place to do this…

  4. I would really like to hear from you on what your current thoughts are in regards to what happened with the segwit 2x fork, it seems like you might be hinting at something with the title, the date and time that you published this video, but maybe i'm just reading into things to much. I also wanted to add that i believe currently you can use lightning network on bitcoin cash, it is built into a new social media platform called yours .org that pays users and content creators for participating. I have been using yours for the past week or so and that experience Combined with cores political actions and lack of willingness to compromise has turned me more against core than ever before, using Bitcoin cash on yours reminds me of what using bitcoin should be like, fast, easy, cheap, innovative and secure, also not bogged down with artificially created congestion or fees.

  5. No mention at all that lightning cannot work economically in a decentralized way. For 99% of the users it will be cheaper and easier to use a major hub (liquidity provider) who will hold your coins. Aka a bank.

  6. Old video. Thank goodness the community was able to lay down the law with the miners and get segwit. The bitcoin community badly needs a functioning mobile bitcoin wallet with lightning capability.
