In this interview, Andreas answers questions about Bitcoin’s development into a secure, borderless system that is already influencing geopolitical relations and decision-making, and why the banks’ attempt to offer “blockchains in a bottle” is mostly a re-run of the boring and isolated intranets failing to compete against the innovation of the open internet.

0:17 – What is the potential for bitcoin to address financial inclusion?
1:58 – What will bitcoin’s impact be on countries like Greece, Cyprus, Argentina, Venezuela, and China?
4:36 – How does Bitcoin’s consensus algorithm and architecture determine its properties?
6:44 – Is Bitcoin a success story in terms of decentralisation?
7:54 – Is Bitcoin’s governance system efficient? Is inefficiency bad?
9:20 – What are the most interesting upcoming developments? Technical: Time-based scripts, Segregated Witness, Schnorr signatures, Lightning Network, etc. Social: remittances, cross-border payments
14:10 – What big challenge does Bitcoin face in the next few years?
15:46 – What kind of regulations should we expect in the next few years? Who / what will be the focus or target?
18:17 – What is your advice for developers interested in Bitcoin, Ethereum, or blockchains in general?
19:12 – Is the blockchain the most interesting part of Bitcoin?
21:47 – Do big banks and other financial companies really need blockchains?
24:44 – Why are open blockchains more innovative?

  1. disappointing to see some of the most upvoted comments on an interview concerned with decentralisation expressing a desire for someone in charge of everything, and of them being described as a king.

  2. How can anyone access btc if there are no fiat on-ramps ?  Or what happens when governments blacklist BTC addresses and only allow permissioned blockchain usage through a private consortium?

  3. Andreas you're so incredibly well spoken and consistently humble with your message. You're a voice of reason in a sea of chaos — we need more voices like you these days. Thank you for all the hard work you put into spreading your thoughtful insights and all your knowledge, not to mention making things easier to understand for folks who are less technical. You're a legend!

  4. Andreas, how can we buy bitcoin without using coinbase which I feel will eventually be compelled to give data on all its users rather than just the users they negotiated with the Government during the court case (I think it was users over $20k from 2015 and before)?
Since the USA government has not provided clear concise information how crypto will be taxed in the future which is a huge uncertainty, I’d prefer to not have every transaction taxed. The goal is for digital currency/cash and coinbase May eventually just track everything and the freedom physical cash has, is lost than with crypto.
Thinking more on taxes, if they tax every transaction, won’t people just take more vacations outside the USA or their country of origin to avoid this huge tax annoyance/uncertainty to spend bitcoin like a true currency?

  5. I think bitcoin is a great idea and Andreas Antonopolous exceptional at explaining all aspects of it.
One question I have is related to the need of government. Governments need to impose some rules, for example the need to pay income tax in order to garantee public services. Will bitcoin reduce the capacity of governments to make people pay income tax and avoid tax evasion?

  6. I am confused by your point regarding regulation of Bitcoin: that the government cannot regulate it because it is open and decentralized. The government has already passed regulation in that the IRS requires us to pay capital gains with each "sale" of the coin, which includes each time we purchase something with it. This regulation is enforceable by the IRS and our courts. Our government regulating the way we use Bitcoin is not only possible, but currently happening.

  7. What a horrible interviewer… Guy made my skin crawl every time he said perfect. Like you're interviewing one of the top experts on this stuff, act like it!! Way to be a mindless robot of a person…

  8. Thanks as always for all your knowledge Andreas. I know by now you feel like your just repeating the same information ad nausea. I'm thankful you acknowledge everyday creates another individual "ready" to really hear you.

  9. "At the cost of efficiency." If one looks at a possible cryptocurrency or block-chain economy and if thinks it may lack efficiency and uses that supposition as a basis for non adaptation-it would likely be a mistake.

The reason why this would be a mistake is the assumption that government MUST be the agent of opportunity and allocation of "favor" or for dispensation of wealth in a functioning economy – but this is not true especially in any field of endeavor that requires a level of innovation in the way concepts are adapted and applied – simply because new 'insights of origin' must always originate from the individual.

A 'think tank' cannot come up with anything on its own that does not already exist within the individuals that they study and many unconventional means of approach are accompanied by a part of the contract which would require that all originators of the query will feel the effect of the knowledge or 'lack of' that they 'gain' from the communication.

In other words a taskmaster who would send 'Jimmy' to Venus is going to directly receive some of the effects of Jimmy's visit on his own person and he cannot use 'Jimmy' as a condom to protect him from the effects. In this way people are 'changed.'

They usually end up attempting to talk to some kind of 'oracle' that they cannot comprehend in a holistic manner 'how this works' and they (in their haste) sign contracts of which they have no abilty to read (sound familiar?). They have made commitments and they will require that YOU pay for their contracts. They do not want to let go of their 'ignorant cash cow' (i.e. the Public).

They are compelled to 'channel outward' for stimuli that they would hope provides inspiration. It is here that a Faustian bargain usually occurs and 'for their troubles' they will receive a series of inelegant symbols or "bad maths" that can plague our species if adopted. There is always an 'inelegant derivative…'

In the End it will leave them with an expression that 'makes them' "impossible to exist." Abomination.

When an inspired person, an innovator or 'genius' is compelled to wait in line for a welfare check or a loan that has to be Okayed by an authority – it is the deathbed of all that is good.

In this way technology and innovation is held back by a doomed and panicking bureaucracy…

Who will be here to 'pick up the pieces?' It could be YOU.
