One of the best pieces of information on measuring the performance of a company is the profit and loss statements. This is a great line item to watch out for when it comes to evaluating a company that you are thinking about investing in. http://bit.ly/100kr1giveaway

In this video I’ll talk about P&L statements and how to figure out what they mean, good or bad, for your investments.

  1. "We're gonna estimate that EPS are $1.22… Oh, they came in at $1.20! It's the end of the world!" I laughed out loud about this. So crazy that this is actually what's going on out there!! Thanks again for the video, Phil.

  2. Thank you for uploading! Have you ever heard the tragedy of Darth Plagueis The Wise? I thought not. It's not a story the Jedi would tell you. It's a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to influence the midichlorians to create life… He had such a knowledge of the dark side that he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying. The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. He became so powerful… the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. Ironic. He could save others from death, but not himself.

  3. It's not about revenue or free cash flow. It's all about growth. You can have the biggest revenue and cash flow in the world, but if it never grows and stays the same year after year, then there is absolutely no reason for the share price to grow either. Might as well then put your money into a savings account.

  4. I'm a freelancer, so I have P&L statements of my own. I use cash method and will admit that if I switched to accrual accounting, my P&Ls would look nicer. So I agree with your advice and wouldn't count on P&L statements as an investor.

  5. Thank you so much for making these videos Phil! So incredibly informative and helpful ? Your stuff is definitely the best source of investment info I've ever come across 🙂

  6. 8:05 Charlie Munger is a legend. Speaking about financial statements and Charlie Munger, he has an interesting view on the financial ratio ROA (return on assets). Quoting him:

“Over the long term, it's hard for a stock to earn a much better return than the business which underlies it earns. If the business earns 6% on capital over 40 years and you hold it for that 40 years, you're not going to make much different than a 6% return – even if you originally buy it at a huge discount. Conversely, if a business earns 18% on capital over 20 or 30 years, even if you pay an expensive-looking price, you'll end up with a fine result."
